LDT recognise the importance of environmental considerations in operating the business. as a responsible organisation, LDT, being part of James Latham Plc seeks to follow in all areas of its activities, policies that recognise this. it is considered that with best practices observed, timber and wood products are the ultimate sustainable and recyclable materials, requiring low energy consumption to process and being thermally efficient in use.


Where possible, the company will purchase timber products independently certified as coming from well-managed forests by organisations such as the Forest Stewardship council® (FSC®) or Programme for the Endorsement of Forest certification (PEFC). The company has set up third party audited chain of custody systems to ensure that this material is not mixed with products of unknown origin.


Where certified product is not available, LDT is committed to sourcing materials from suppliers who are operating within the laws of their own country. Third party verification is sought in high-risk areas where governance is weak. The Timber Trades Federation (TTF) responsible purchasing policy, which is a risk based due diligence process, is carried out on suppliers.


The Group aims to adopt environmental standards at least equal to legal requirements and to integrate environmental considerations into its decision making in such areas as transport, energy usage, treatment plants, waste disposal and health and safety requirements.

LDT is now PEFC Certified


The PEFC Council (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation, founded in 1999 which promotes sustainably managed forests through independent third party certification. The PEFC provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests.


PEFC is a global umbrella organisation for the assessment of and mutual recognition of national forest certification schemes developed in a multi-stakeholder process. These national schemes build upon the inter-governemental processes for the promotion of sustainable forest management, a series of on-going mechanisms supported by 149 governments in the world covering 85% of the world's forest area.


PEFC has in its membership 32 independent national forest certification systems of which 22 to date have been through a rigorous assessment process involving public consultation and the use of independent consultants to provide the assessments on which mutual recognition decisions are taken by the membership. These 22 schemes account for over 191 million hectares of certified forests producing millions of tonnes of certified timber to the market place making PEFC the world's largest certification scheme. The other national members schemes are at various stages of developement and are working towards mutual recognition under the PEFC processes.

Forest Stewardship Council


LDT are now FSC Certified.


The Forest Stewardship Council is an international, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world's forests.


It was founded in 1993 in response to public concern about deforestation and demand for a trustworthy wood-labelling scheme.


There are national working groups in 28 countries including the UK.


FSC UK is a registered charity. It is supported by NGOs including WWF, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and the Woodland Trust.


FSC UK Working Group is legally and financially independent of FSC international. It sets forest management standards for the UK, promotes the system and provides an information service.

LDT are Corporate Members of TRADA.


The Timber Research and Development Association (TRADA) - is an internationally recognised centre of excellence on the specification and use of timber and wood products.


TRADA is a company limited by guarantee and not-for-profit membership-based organisation.


TRADA's origins go back over 70 years and its name is synonymous with independence and authority. Its position in the industry is unique with a diverse membership encompassing companies and individuals from around the world and across the entire wood supply chain, from producers, merchants and manufacturers, to architects, engineers and end users.


Their aim is to provide members with the highest quality information on timber and wood products to enable them to maximise the benefits that timber can provide.


They seek to achieve this aim through active and on-going programmes of information and research. Information is provided through their website, an extensive collection of printed materials and training courses.

Timber Trade Federation


LDT are members of The Timber Trade Federation and subscribe to many of their schemes and policies


The Timber Trade Federation is the voice of the UK timber industry and its mission is to help create and sustain the conditions in which its members can prosper.


The Federation represents the timber industry’s views to central and local government, the devolved political institutions and the European Commission. It is working closely with the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Department for International Development on a number of issues. It has also provided input on behalf of the industry to the Forest Industries Sector Sustainability Group, which advised the UK Government at the World Summit On Sustainable Development in South Africa.


The Federation also provides its Members with information and services on technical matters, contracts, statistics and standards as well as legal advice. It has also guarantees through its Conduct Assurance Scheme that should any customer have a complaint against a Federation Member it will be independently investigated.


Through its Forests Forever campaign, the Federation promotes the environmental advantages of timber and timber products. It offers Members advice and technical support on packaging waste regulations, life cycle analysis, climate change issues, forestry management and certification. It acts as the environmental voice of the timber industry.
