North American & Canadian

Overview

At James Latham, we source and supply a number of quality softwoods from across the globe. Our timber experts always select the finest materials from our suppliers around the world and our American and Canadian softwoods are no exception.

While ‘softwood’ may sound inferior to ‘hardwood’, we can assure you that all of our softwood timbers are just as strong as our hardwood collection. The difference is that the surface of softwoods is, indeed, softer, which makes them easier to work with in joinery projects whilst still supplying the same strength and durability as hardwood.

The durability of the reddish-brown heartwoods of Clear Douglas Fir and Western Red Cedar make them perfect for furniture, external & interior joinery, and lightweight construction work, among other applications from gymnastics equipment and boat building to beehives and summer house construction. Although Pacific Coast Hemlock, sometimes known as West Coast Hemlock, is not as durable, the pale brown grain works very well for internal joinery.

We care about the environment at James Latham Direct Timber and place sustainability at the forefront of everything that we do. Our North American & Canadian softwoods are sourced responsibly and approved by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), who help us to ensure our suppliers are working sustainably.
